Royal Burgh

St Andrews first became a burgh between the years 1144 and 1153 when its status was changed Bishop Robert, with the permission of King David I. In the year 1614 St Andrews became a "Burgh of Regality" and was subsequently confirmed as a Royal Burgh in 1620 by King James VI.
