St Andrews Castle

The castle of the Archbishops of St Andrews. Visit the interesting mine and counter-mine, these are fascinating examples of siege techniques used in medieval times which were employed when the castle had been under siege from 1546 until 1547.

There is evidence of two uncompleted countermines that can be seen inside the entry gate. These might have been used as soundings to determine the direction to dig or to provide false directions to the attackers. There is also a bottle dungeon hollowed out of solid rock - from which death was the only release.

There has been a fortification of some sort at this site since the late 1100's.
The St. Andrews castle has changed ownership many times. It fell to the English in the early 1300's. The Scots retook the castle in 1314, then once again the English captured it again in 1330.

The Scots recovered the site in 1337, then after this siege, the Scots destroyed the castle so that the English would no longer find it of defensive value. A reconstruction of the building was undertaken around 1390 by Bishop Walter Trail. During the 15th century the Sea Tower was used as a prison and had the now famous 'bottle dungeon'.
